The Innholders' Arms
Lancelot Chapman issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Coldharbour (now Upper Thames Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 701; Obv inscription: LANCELOT.CHAPMAN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Innholders' arms (in field); Rev inscription: AT.COAL.HARBOR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = L.M.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer may have been ?Lancelot Chapman of St Magnus the Martyr, 1638 rent £20, wood and coal wharf in St Magnus; married Mable Haton 1638, children b. 1639, 1649, see Percival Boyd, [Inhabitants of London]. Society of Genealogists, MS. 49860. The arms of the Worshipful Company of Innholders are: Azure a chevron argent between two oatsheaves or, on a chief argent a "St. Julian's cross" sable (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
